A post from one guys audition experience…

a blog was from http://www.myspace.com/supersell

Well….I did it. I played 2 massive radio hits (and a cover
song) with a huge band in the their rehearsal room yesterday and this
is how it went.

The audition was at Swinghouse; a well-known rehearsal studio in
Hollywood. It is a non-descript white building with no signs on the
front, so that fools like me can’t find it and attempt to verbally whip
the asses of the stars who don’t want to talk to me, but instead just
want to play their songs and not be bothered. [Image removed] The
bands that rehearse there are bands like Blink 182, Green Day, Fall Out
Boy, etc….get the picture?

So I arrived and to my suprise they actually let me in. As I got
there another guy was headed in to run some tunes. I heard him to
“Shimmer” and “Jesus or a Gun”. I liked his voice, but it didn’t have
any bite to it. Also, he kinda freaked when he couldn’t hit some of
the notes in “Jesus”, so he started complaining about monitors and not
being able to hear himself. He musta been deaf, cuz I could hear him
just fine and there were 2 soundproof walls in between us. I didn’t
say anything to him though as he told me to “watch out for the shitty
monitors.”

Anyway, when it was my turn a dude named Barry…who was very, very
nice and accomodating brought in to meet the band. Carl, Jeff and
Tommy were milling about and once we exchanged pleasantries (sp?) it
was time to get going. It appeared as though they were recording the
audio to go along with a video camera that was set up, but I never
signed any waivers, so who knows. I sure would love to get a copy of
that though for posterity. They asked what I wanted to do first, so I
suggested “Shimmer”, but once we got started it became very apparent
that the guy before me HAD to be deaf b/c the monitors were so loud I
was squealing feedback hardcore everytime I got near the mic. So they
called in the sound tech to fix it and once again we were underway.
Once he pulled my vox down a bit, it sounded like a massive rock show
in there…it was the single best rehearsal sound I have EVER had! I
am pleased to say that I couldn’t have been happier with my performance
of “Shimmer”. Lyrics, melodies…everything was pretty much bang on;
so needless to say…I was very happy. As soon as the song ended Jeff
asked if I wanted to do “Hemmorage”, which I agreed to. But as we were
getting started Carl saw I brought a cheat sheet for “Man in the Box”.
He asked if I’d like to do that and I said I knew them all, so why
not. I didn’t do as well on that song as I’d have liked to, but I
didnt suck even though it’s one of the hardest songs for me to
do…which is why I agreed to do it. So they wouldn’t think I was
scared…which I was.

When that was over, we chatted a bit more and decided I should do
“Hemmorage”. I jacked up one tiny line of the words, but it wasn’t
unrecoverable, so I didn’t feel like it hurt me. Aside from that one
very small lyrical mistake, I did as good a job on that song as I would
have hoped to do. I knew it well enough to get into it and really play
with them so I REALLY enjoyed “Hemmorage”. If I never do anything
again, I had a wonderful time playing 2 smash hit with my peers. And I
don’t get the gig, it isn’t because I tanked the audition, so I won’t
have that albatross following me around.

After that they complimented me on my audition and we chatted about
how crazy Jessie is from KDGE 102.1 (Dallas). WE all agree…yes…she
IS crazy, but we love her and those weird kitty litter desserts! So
with small talk wrapping up my 20 min or so I hit the road a happy and
anxious man.

Overall, it went as well as I’d have hoped it could go. Do I wish I
hadn’t screwed up or been perfect on Man in the Box? Quite simply,
no. All things happen as they should and I am confident that when I
was hitting on all cylinders things just “felt right”; and hopefully
they agree. I have no time frame for word back from them or their
management, but was invited to contact them tomorrow to see if there
was any word on if (and/or when) there is a next step.

In closing, I’d like to sincerely thank all my friends and family who
kept me in their prayers, as I embarked upon a cool little chapter in
my life. Having each of your little notes in my heart was enough to
keep me sane, calm and confident up until and throughtout the
experience. So from the bottom of my heart I say thank you and ask
that you say one more for me as they decide which way to go. I will be
back on here again if I find out one way or the other….take care.
